Helping Rural Afghan Women Make a Living

There was a time when Zakia was so poor, she could not afford to put food on the table. Zakia, a resident of Ulmarab village in Nahri Shahi district of Balkh Province, Afghanistan received technical training and resources to establish a mushroom production unit. She is the only self-employed woman in her village and is hailed as an example of economic empowerment in her community. Zakia received support from the National Horticulture and Livestock Project (NHLP), which helps farmers increase their fruit and vegetable production and has improved nutrition in northern Afghanistan.
