For decades, heavily industrialized infrastructure and poor environmental regulations led to severe environmental pollution in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan. Widespread pollution with hazardous components impacted the city and its surrounding area. The containment of terricones, or waste dumps, thus became a priority for the government. The "Ust-Kamenogorsk Environmental Remediation Project" helped to halt the infiltration of contaminants into groundwater, preventing existing plumes spreading further, and strengthening the institutional mechanisms for groundwater monitoring.
