Google Hangout: Extending Working Lives of Older Workers in Emerging Markets

Many developed and emerging market countries, especially in Europe and Asia, now face the challenge of rapid population aging, raising the importance of enabling workers to extend working lives to older ages in order to sustain economic growth. However, the design of public pension systems, inflexibility of work organizations and labor regulations, and the declining health, cognition, and skill relevance of older workers have created barriers to lengthening working lives. In this hangout, well-known experts on aging in Eastern Europe, China, and Japan, and from the World Bank, discuss the challenges of extending working lives in different country contexts, lessons from experience, and policy priorities for achieving greater success in extending working lives in the future.
