Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting with Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou, Prime Minister of Niger

NIAMEY, March 30, 2023 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou and members of the cabinet of Niger.

President Malpass commended the efforts of the government to maintain stability in Niger and address security concerns along borders across the Sahel region. President Malpass and Prime Minister Mahamadou spoke about the World Bank Group’s support for Niger, including through the IDA20 Prevention and Resilience Allocation to accelerate recovery and stabilization of conflict-prone areas.

President Malpass acknowledged the drastic increase in forced displacement over recent years, both refugees and internally displaced people. President Malpass reiterated the World Bank Group’s readiness to work with the government on targeted assistance to forcibly displaced people, social cohesion, and national and regional policy dialogues.

President Malpass and Prime Minister Mahamadou discussed the impacts of climate change and demographics on conflict and fragility. President Malpass and Prime Minister Mahamadou also spoke about urgent need to improve access and quality of education given strong population growth and the focused efforts on girls’ education.
