WASHINGTON, October 14, 2022 — Yesterday, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Annika Saarikko, Minister of Finance of Finland.
President Malpass was pleased to reaffirm to Minister Saarikko the strong partnership between the World Bank Group (WBG) and Finland. President Malpass thanked Minister Saarikko for her chairing the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action. President Malpass and Minister Saarikko discussed the importance of sustainable development and robust carbon markets with verifiable emission reductions.
President Malpass highlighted to Minister Saarikko the WBG’s strong support for Ukraine as it works to recover and rebuild, and noted the WBG’s efforts on agriculture, transportation, basic infrastructure, and supporting the private sector.
President Malpass appreciated Minister Saarikko’s thoughts on the global situation and was glad to discuss with Minister Saarikko issues faced by countries with high debt burdens. President Malpass shared with Minister Saarikko his views on the negative impacts of unsustainable debt burdens and non-transparent debt on developing countries as they work to address overlapping global crises.
