Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting with Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi of the United Kingdom

WASHINGTON, August 31, 2022 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi of the United Kingdom.

President Malpass and Chancellor Zahawi discussed the energy challenges facing Europe and the world, and the World Bank Group’s (WBG) efforts to provide economic and humanitarian support for Ukraine and support Ukraine’s public sector. President Malpass noted the urgency for greater investment in Ukraine to provide service delivery and heat for the winter.

President Malpass and Chancellor Zahawi held productive discussions on the ongoing response to the global economic crisis, and the WBG’s deployment of financing, analytics, and convening power to help developing countries address critical economic issues. President Malpass was glad to hear Chancellor Zahawi’s thoughts on these subjects, as well as on the importance of transparency and statutory considerations in achieving debt treatments for vulnerable countries. President Malpass and Chancellor Zahawi discussed WBG support for Zambia and the country’s ongoing debt reduction efforts.

President Malpass and Chancellor Zahawi also spoke on efforts by both the WBG and United Kingdom to address climate change and energy issues. President Malpass highlighted to Chancellor Zahawi WBG support for low- and middle- income countries as they respond to the energy crisis.
