Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting with Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze of Germany

MUNICH, February 18, 2022 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Svenja Schulze, German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development and Germany’s Governor of the World Bank Group.

President Malpass congratulated Minister Schulze on her recent appointment as Minister and highlighted the World Bank Group’s efforts toward Germany’s development agenda, particularly regarding debt, climate change, and gender.

President Malpass and Minister Schulze discussed the severe reversals in development and the pandemic’s negative impact on poverty, nutrition, education, and security.

President Malpass and Minister Schulze spoke in detail on the importance of comprehensive debt solutions and potential enhancements to the G20’s Common Framework for Debt Treatments. President Malpass also highlighted the importance of debt transparency.

President Malpass and Minister Schulze also discussed climate finance that achieves the most results and the importance of adaptation for the world’s poorest countries.

President Malpass expressed his appreciation for Germany’s support to the replenishment of IDA20. He also reaffirmed the World Bank Group’s commitment to supporting Compact with Africa countries.
