Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting with President Faustin-Archange Touadéra of the Central African Republic (CAR)

NEW YORK CITY, September 21, 2021—Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with President Faustin-Archange Touadéra of the Central African Republic (CAR).

President Malpass and President Touadéra discussed the role of the World Bank – particularly IDA – in supporting critical development challenges of CAR, including education, health, human capital, rural connectivity, energy and social protection. President Malpass emphasized the World Bank’s readiness to provide additional financing to CAR in support of further COVID-19 vaccine deployment.

President Malpass expressed concern with the deteriorating security situation in CAR and emphasized the critical importance of a ceasefire and inclusive dialogue in support of human rights. President Malpass also stressed the importance of budget transparency, domestic resource mobilization, and a new Mining Code that meets international standards, all of which would help put CAR on a recovery path and help unlock international development support.
