Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting with Paulo Guedes, Minister of the Economy, Brazil

WASHINGTON, April 9, 2021Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Brazilian Minister of the Economy Paulo Guedes. President Malpass expressed his concern with the health crisis in Brazil and reaffirmed the World Bank Group’s readiness to provide financial support and technical assistance for Brazil’s health emergency response efforts. President Malpass and Minister Guedes agreed that fast vaccine deployment is instrumental to halting the COVID-19 pandemic, both in Brazil and around the world.

President Malpass emphasized the importance of action on climate issues, especially in the context of the rise in deforestation in the Amazon. He reaffirmed the World Bank Group’s readiness to help Brazil make strong progress on integrating development and climate in Brazil’s NDCs. The President and Minister also discussed social protection programs and fiscal stability, as well as other economic and development issues of mutual interest.
