WASHINGTON, April 2, 2021 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Sudanese Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim Mohamed. President Malpass began the meeting by congratulating Minister Ibrahim on Sudan clearing its arrears to the International Development Association (IDA), and reaffirmed the World Bank Group’s (WBG) continuing support for Sudan on the path to substantial debt relief, economic revival, and inclusive development.

President Malpass congratulated Sudan on the successful unification and stabilization of its exchange rate, a major step toward growth and lower inflation. He welcomed the increasing reserves from inflows and remittances, the banking system’s shift to Sudanese pounds, and the shift to exports from the underground economy. He encouraged Minister Ibrahim to continue the Sudanese government’s good momentum toward further steps that create jobs and new businesses, noting the huge potential of Sudan and its neighbors.

During their meeting, President Malpass and Minister Ibrahim discussed Sudan’s progress toward the upcoming HIPC Decision Point in June 2021 and the World Bank’s support to Sudan, including through the Family Support Program which is expected to provide cash transfers to around 80 percent of Sudanese population. President Malpass voiced his optimism that Sudan would successfully reach the Decision Point, noting continued close cooperation between the WBG and other international and bilateral partners toward delivering substantial support to the Sudanese government.
