Malawi: The World Bank suspends disbursements to contractor working on the Thabwa-Chitseko-Seven Road

The World Bank has decided to suspend disbursements to a contractor working on the Thabwa-Chitseko-Seven Road, which is part of the Malawi Floods Emergency Recovery Project due to serious breaches related to gender-based violence, sexual harassment, labor standards, and occupational health and safety issues. Allegations against the government-hired contractor were uncovered as part of the World Bank’s supervision and due diligence duties. The partial suspension will be in place until we are satisfied that the government has taken decisive steps to implement the required safeguards. The World Bank is working to ensure that those who may have been harmed receive the support they need.
