There is fresh interest in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) now, along with the emergence of less visible forms of state ownership through minority stakes, SOE subsidiaries and the internationalization of SOEs. The scope and nature of state involvement in the production of goods and services requires more attention, especially on how SOEs interact with the rest of the economy, how their presence affects private firms, and how they impact markets, investment, innovation, and growth. This event will be informed by the new World Bank report The Invisible Businesses of the State, providing an opportunity to discuss lessons-learned and the way forward for SOEs in today’s economies.
