Aspirations, inequality and development

What role do aspirations and social norms play in shaping economic development? Aspirations are a potentially important determinant of individuals’ educational investments and occupational choice, thereby opening the way for policy interventions aimed at changing people’s aspirations as a way of lifting them out of poverty.

In this keynote address, Eliana La Ferrara, Professor of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School, shares her views and discusses her own research on aspirations, social norms, and development.
