Agriculture and food systems in Latin America and the Caribbean Region (LAC) are rightfully recognized as among the most successful on the planet: they have fed a fast-growing population, facilitated economic development, enabled urbanization, generated substantial exports, and helped drive down global hunger and poverty. Yet despite these significant contributions, the public image of the region's agriculture and food systems reflects only part of a more complicated reality.
This new report from the World Bank offers a fresh way to think about the role that agriculture plays in Latin America and the Caribbean Region, and shows that what has traditionally been thought of as “the agriculture sector” is part of a much larger food system whose performance affects the economy at multiple levels including economic growth, jobs and poverty reduction, food and nutrition security and climate resilient ecosystems.
Framed in the launch of the report “Future Foodscapes: Re-Imagining Agriculture in Latin America and the Caribbean”, this Meeting will provide an opportunity to showcase the findings of the report on the role that agriculture and food systems play in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), and engage with Government Authorities and Stakeholders across the region on how to drive LAC’s agricultural sector to a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive future.
