  • DG ECHO B.2 and the World Bank would like to invite you to a presentation on 12 September by the World Bank / Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) of their recently published report Lifelines: The Resilient Infrastructure Opportunity”.

Millions of people worldwide are facing the consequences of unreliable electricity grids, inadequate water and sanitation systems, and over-strained transport networks. From floods and storms to earthquakes and landslides, natural hazards magnify the challenges faced by these fragile systems. These challenges will only grow in the face of climate change without adequate action. The report lays out a framework for understanding infrastructure resilience — the ability of infrastructure systems to function and meet users’ needs during and after a natural hazard — and makes an economic case for building more resilient infrastructure. The report builds on data from 137 countries worldwide, including from Europe.

The report and its summary can be downloaded at: https://www.gfdrr.org/en/lifelines

The presentation will be given by the author of the report, Mr. Stephane Hallegatte. Mr. Hallegatte is a lead economist at the World Bank with 15 years of experience in academic research in environmental economics and climate science. Most recently, he led the World Bank reports “Unbreakable, Building Resilience of the Poor in the Face of Natural Disasters” and “Shock Waves: Managing the Impacts of Climate Change on Poverty”, and was the team leader for the World Bank Group Climate Change Action Plan.
