The World Bank, the Asia Development Bank (ADB), the Department for International Development (DFID) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) published the report on “The WEB of Transport Corridors in South Asia” in September 2018. It proposes a holistic appraisal methodology to ensure that transport corridors have Wide Economic Benefits (the WEB in the title) and that possible negative impacts such as environmental degradation and increased inequality are minimized. The report focuses on South Asia not only as one of the world’s most populous and poorest regions, but as a hinge between East Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
This seminar featured a keynote speech on the key points of the report by Martin Rama, Senior Economic Advisor to the Vice President for South Asia Region of the World Bank, followed by a panel discussion on the current development and future prospect of corridors development in the region for achieving inclusive and sustainable growth.
