Panel discussion on Women's Economic Participation in the Maghreb and Legal Issues and Solutions

  • This event is one of three sub-regional events in MENA to launch the Women, Business and the Law (WBL) 2018 report and raise awareness and conduct dialogue on the report’s key findings.

    To leverage the findings and recommendations of the WBL 2018 report to engage policy makers and the private sector in a dialogue and mobilize actors to act and address some of these legal barriers pertaining to women’s entrepreneurship.

    The event brings together some 70 participants from the private sector, policy makers, financial institutions and media. The event is a collaboration between International Finance Corporate (IFC) Country Management in Maghreb, IFC’s Gender Secretariat, IFC’s Banking on Women, World Bank Group (WBG)’s WBL team, and IBRD in Morocco and Tunisia. The local partner is CGEM: Confédération Générale des Entreprises Du Maroc.

    Paula Tavares

    Private Sector Development Specialist, World Bank Group

    Paula Tavares is a legal gender specialist with over 10 years of experience working with international development issues, focusing on comparative legal analysis, gender equality and the legal and regulatory framework affecting women’s economic inclusion. Paula joined the World Bank Group’s Women, Business and the Law in 2010 and currently leads the Protecting Women from Violence indicator, examining gender based violence legislation and issues globally. Her work is aimed at improving the legal framework and closing gaps in laws affecting gender equality and protection of women from violence. Her prior legal experience includes working with government multilateral trade agreements, private sector initiatives and non-governmental organizations. Paula is a Brazilian lawyer and holds an LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center and a specialization in International Relations from the University of Brasilia, Brazil.
