Ending FGM: The Role of Laws, Education and Social Norms

February 1, 2018

Preston Auditorium, World Bank, Washington DC

Featuring:

  • Recent World Bank analysis demonstrates that FGM can be reduced, particularly when mothers are better educated and not forced into child marriages.  Speakers will explore the kind of interventions necessary to further reduce and end the practice. Recent legislation banning FGM in countries where it is prevalent is a major step forward. Although, the practice continues,  the analysis strongly suggests that much more intensive investments in girls (including ending child marriage and improving education) are urgently needed.

Sponsored by the Legal Vice Presidency, Gender-Based Violence Thematic Group, Gender Group, and Education Global Practice of the World Bank Group, “Ending FGM”  is a component of the analytical work benefiting from the support of the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation and the Global Partnership for Education.
