Markus Kitzmuller is Lead Economist (Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment) and Acting Program Leader for Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions based in Dakar, covering Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde and the Gambia. Markus is leading economic policy dialogue,  development policy financing operations as well as macro fiscal and growth analysis across West and Central Africa since 2017. Previously, he was a Senior Economist with the South Asia Office of the Chief Economist, leading regional economic analysis, and an Economist in Investment Climate - a joint World Bank and IFC group - where he focused on promoting Competition Policies as a tool for financial and private sector development globally. Markus holds a PhD in Economics from the European University Institute, a bilingual MA/DEA in international economics from the College of Europe (Bruges), and completed undergraduate studies in Economics and Finance at the University of Innsbruck and the London School of Economics. He held academic appointments at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the University of Chicago and worked as an Economist in the European Commission DG ECFIN. His work was published in academic and policy outlets.
