Alternate Executive Director: EDS02

Koji Uemura is the World Bank Group Alternate Executive Director for Japan since June 29, 2023. Mr. Uemura has about 20 years of experience in policy making on development policy, international finance, and fiscal management at Japan Ministry of Finance (MoF) and the International Monetary Fund.

Prior to joining the Bank, Mr. Uemura has held several leadership positions at Japan MoF. At the International Bureau, he served as Director and senior Deputy Director positions in various areas including HR management, development policy, foreign exchange markets monitoring, and bilateral financial cooperation. At the Budget Bureau, he served as senior Deputy Director in research division, and Deputy Budget Examiner for determining the size of gross annual fiscal transfer from the central government to local governments.

Mr. Uemura was also an Economist at the IMF for three years (2014-2017). At the Technical Assistance Division of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department, he supported several African and Asian countries to improve FX market and financial supervision.

Mr. Uemura received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Tokyo in 2004. He also earned his Master of Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School in 2011.
