Jon Erlingur Jonasson


Jon Erlingur Jonasson an Icelandic national, serves as the World Bank Group Alternate Executive Director representing Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden.

From 2020 to 2022, Mr. Jonasson served as Director General for Bilateral and Regional Affairs in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, where he was also responsible for Climate, Natural Resources, and Environment. In 2019 he served as Director General for International Development Cooperation and in 2018, Director for the Department of Climate, Natural Resources and Environment.

During 2014–2018 he was Permanent Representative of Iceland to FAO, WFP, and IFAD in Rome and in 2009–2014, Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.  

Mr. Jonasson has extensive experience from multilateral cooperation, both within the United Nations system and the World Bank, where his focus has been on Climate, Natural Resources, Environment, Food Security and Food Systems.

Mr. Jonasson graduated from the University of Iceland and did post-graduate studies in biology at the University of Oslo and University of Copenhagen.
