IEG Good Practice Awards: 2006 Winners

Initiative with Demonstrated Impact/Results Award

Winner

“Natural Disaster Hotspots: A Global Risk Analysis” Study

Interview with Team Lead

Margaret Arnold, Award for Natural Disaster Hotspots A Global Risk Analysis Study

Reason for Selection

This Award has been introduced this year for recognizing Bank initiatives -- including analytical and strategic work -- that are influential, involve innovation, and have demonstrated impact or results. This award goes to the "Natural Disasters Hotspots" study, an innovative and influential study marked by a noteworthy partnership highlighting collaborative work among multiple stakeholders including Columbia University, an international consortium (ProVention), and the World Bank. The study identified countries prone to experiencing a high frequency of natural disasters according to single and multiple disaster variables. By determining the prevalence of natural disasters using a common geospatial unit of reference in all countries, and by ranking countries in terms of highest risk potential, this study is influencing risk mitigation investments and informing the Bank and other donors on how to better manage future emergency lending.

Project Description

Date of Study: April 30, 2005
