Community empowerment efforts reaching 19 million people
From 2003-2011, 19 million rural people in all 34 of Afghanistan's provinces have benefitted from improved infrastructure such as access to water, electricity and roads through the National Solidarity Program. 23,205 kilometers of tertiary and 640 kilometers of secondary roads were constructed/rehabilitated. 40,000 kilowatts (KW) of electricity was produced through the completion of micro hydro and solar power energy. Education in Afghanistan: Achieving results in a difficult environment
In 2001, after the fall of the Taliban, net enrollment was estimated at 43% for boys and a dismal 3% for girls. Since then IDA supported a series of education programs aimed at providing access and quality education to Afghan students at all levels. School enrollment has increased from 1 million to 7 million children. From 2007-2010, Girls’ enrollment skyrocketed from 839,000 to more than 2.5 million. Read More »
