HRDS:
Tanzania Human Resource Development Survey |
The Tanzania Human Resource Development
Survey covered 5,184 households in mainland Tanzania and
Zanzibar, and consisted of a household survey, a limited
community questionnaire, and a price questionnaire. The field
work took place between August 1993 and January 1994 for mainland
Tanzania, and during July 1994 for Zanzibar. The survey was
sponsored by The Population and Human Resources Division of the
Eastern Africa Department of The World Bank, in collaboration
with the University of Dar es Salaam and the Governemnt of
Tanzania's Planning Commission.
The objectives of the survey were to provide information on
the following:
- Household use of, and expenditure patterns for, social
services
- Reasons for low levels of household investment in
education and health services for children
- The distribution of the benefits of public spending for
social services and how to improve targeting
- Households' evaluation of the social services available
to them
- The potential for demand-side interventions to increase
human capital investment directly (especially for girls
and the poor)
- The feasibility of repeated national monitoring surveys
to assess the impact of future Bank and government
projects in the social sectors, and to increase
Tanzania's capacity to perform household survey work
