Tools for Assessment: Models and Databases
Main Tools
Energy Information Systems
These tools consist of a database plus some means for analysing the data. One does not generally characterise such a structure as an energy model, per se.
Energy System Models
These tools/models focus on the analysis of the energy supply system in a systematic manner. Some of the energy system models are extended to include parts of the energy demand analysis as well. Others provide additional features to calculate the impacts of the planned energy system. These impacts can include emissions, economic and social aspects.
Modular Packages
These tools may consist of several different kinds of models such as a macro-economic component, an energy supply and demand balance, an energy demand alone, etc., which are integrated into a package. The user does not need to run all the models but may select only a subset depending upon the nature of the analysis to be carried out.
Integrated Models
These tools consist of an integrated set of equations, simultaneously solved. These models usually cover energy-economy-environmental interactions.
