J. Craig Venter Speaks at CGIAR Annual Meetings

J. Craig Venter, the president of Celera Genomics who led the private-sector effort to decode the human genome, was the key speaker at a special convocation sponsored by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) at the World Bank.

Dr. Venter spoke on "Genomics: From Microbes to Man" at 5:30 pm Thursday, October 26, in the World Bank's H Building Auditorium, 1912 G Street NW, Washington DC.

Dr. Venter's address was part of the Sir John Crawford Memorial Lecture series sponsored by the Australian government at the CGIAR annual meetings. Sir John Crawford, a distinguished civil servant, educator, and agriculturalist, was one of the founders of the CGIAR and the first Chair of the CGIAR's Technical Advisory Committee.

The CGIAR is the world's largest agricultural research network, with 16 international research centers and 10,000 scientists and scientific support staff in more than 100 countries. The World Bank, UN Development Programme, and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) serve as cosponsors. CGIAR scientists recently won the Millennium World Food Prize for developing a higher-yielding, high quality protein corn that can help prevent malnutrition in millions of people.
