Patience Bongiwe Kunene serves as the Executive Director at the Board of the World Bank representing Angola, Nigeria and South Africa since November 2016.
Ms. Kunene started her career in the public service in 1994 as a Director in the National Treasury of South Africa. She was seconded to the World Bank in 1998 as a Senior Advisor, Africa Group I Constituency Office. After leaving the Bank, she went on to serve as the Head of the Gauteng Provincial Treasury of South Africa until 2004. Ms. Kunene was appointed to Chief of Staff to the Deputy President of South Africa in 2006. She later moved to serve as Policy Coordinator in the Presidency of South Africa from 2008 to 2010. Prior to rejoining the Bank as Alternate Executive Director in March 2015, she served as Head of Public Sector Banking at the Standard Bank Group.
Ms. Kunene graduated with an MSc in Development Economics from the School of African Studies, London University.
She served on the South African National Parks as a Board member from 2009 to 2015. She also served as Chairman of the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone in 2012.
