This student book, which draws on data published by the World Bank, is addressed to young people,
students, teachers, and all those interested in exploring issues of global development. It encourages
learners to seek their own solutions to sustainable development challenges by exploring and discussing
a broad range of critical global issues.
This completely revised and expanded second edition of Beyond Economic Growth includes new sections
on:
- global hunger,
- HIV/AIDS,
- international migration,
- government corruption, and
- the Millennium Development Goals.

Country Adaptations of First Edition
This book was designed to be adapted by individual countries to reflect their specific development
issues and to meet their own curriculum needs.
The first country to have adapted the original book for its specific curricular needs was Russia.
The book called The
World and Russia is available online in both English and Russian. Furthermore, the Latvian
adaptation, The
World and Latvia , and the Belorussian adaptation, The
World and Belarus, have been published in Latvian and in Russian (respectively) and are
now available online in PDF format.
