  • Undoubtedly, the largest burden of the conflict in Syria has fallen onto Syrian shoulders. However, Syria’s neighbors have also been troubled by the brutal conflict. They have braved massive demographic, economic, and social shocks that would challenge even the most advanced economies in the world.

With persistent delays in the resolution of the conflict, and absent a swift economic recovery in Syria, the conflict-driven challenges in Mashreq are increasingly becoming protracted. This session aims to shed light on the mechanisms through which the conflict in Syria has manifested its impact on the economic and social outcomes in Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon. It will also consider how these effects may evolve in the future and what can be done at national and international levels to promote stability and prosperity in the region.

    Format of the session

The session will feature a presentation about the new World Bank report The Fallout of War: The Regional Consequences of the Conflict in Syria, which was produced with support from the governments of Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and from UNHCR, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.
