THE WORLD BANK GROUP IN MIDDLE INCOME COUNTRIES
Report: The Middle Income Trap
Middle Income Countries (MICs) are diverse in size, population, and income. For fiscal year 2026, based on the World Bank Atlas method (2024 GNI per capita), income groups are defined as:
- Low income: $1,135 or less
- Lower middle income: $1,136–$4,495
- Upper middle income: $4,4966–$13,935
- High income: $13,935 or more
The World Bank Group partners with MICs as clients, shareholders, and global actors. We provide tailored financing (loans, guarantees, risk management) and knowledge and advisory services, including reimbursable advisory services, to support their global roles, advance second-generation reforms, and foster knowledge exchange and collaboration among developing countries to share know-how and solutions.
