Belarus is an upper-middle-income country in Eastern Europe with over 9 million people (2024). A landlocked country, it borders Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine. With a mixed economy and a large state-owned enterprises sector, Belarus’s major exports include fertilizers, petrochemicals, agricultural and timber products, and heavy machinery.

Belarus became a member of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development in July 1992.

The World Bank Group has not approved any new loans to Belarus since mid-2020 and stopped all its programs in the country as of March 2, 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
