Country Challenge
Pasture-based livestock production is affected by climate change, but also contributes to global warming by eroding soil carbon caused by overgrazing and by methane emissions from the digestive systems of ruminant animals. In Armenia, carbon rich alpine grasslands account for 60% of the total land area but are poorly managed by predominantly small land-holders a third of whom still live in poverty.
Project Goals
The project helps targeted communities improve the productivity and sustainability of their pasture and livestock system thus improving food security and incomes. The inputs financed include community planning, pasture rotation techniques, supplementary fodder production, rehabilitation of degraded areas, and improved milk production and animal disease control.
