BRIEF

A Message from World Bank Research Director, Asli Demirguc-Kunt—July 2016

June 29, 2016

Welcome to this month’s World Bank Research E-Newsletter, a monthly summary of research conducted by our department.

Since we launched the Policy Research Talks series over two years ago, we have organized over 30 talks on topics ranging from the drivers of global inequality to the role of informality in development. We have just drawn this season to a close, and we’re already busy getting ready to launch next season’s line up in September with a talk on Trade, FDI, and Global Value Chains. Our line-up for fall 2016 will also cover nutrition and stunting, transportation, and SMEs, among other topics. You can visit our Policy Research Talks page for details as they become available.

Beyond the Policy Research Talks, we’re also laying the groundwork for our annual conferences, including the Land and Poverty ConferenceFinancial Sector Overview Conference, and Urbanization and Poverty Conference. And this year we have two new conferences that should prove to be big draws: the Equity and Development Conference (October 20–21) and the Finance and Development Conference (November 2–3).

This month’s newsletter focuses on issues of governance—a topic that is at the core of our recently launched Policy Research Report Making Politics Work for Development. You can also read about politically connected firms in Egypt; tariff evasion in Tunisia; World Bank support for public sector governance reform; public interest radio; and much more.

Enjoy!
