Building Human Capital in Africa: The Future of a Generation

Young people are the drivers of Africa’s economy and future. With eleven million youth expected to enter Africa’s labor market every year for the next decade, now is the time for urgent action to build and nurture the region’s human capital. 

The event focused on the future of Africa’s youth through the lens of inspirational youth leaders, policy makers, and civil society to collectively highlight the challenges, aspirations, and actions taken to help build the human capital of the next generation.

All Africa Digital Economy Moonshot

Digital innovation is creating unprecedented opportunities for Africa to grow its economy, create jobs, and transform people’s lives.

With the aim to digitally connect every individual, business and government in Africa by 2030, the African Union, with the support of the World Bank Group, has embarked on an ambitious journey—a “moonshot” that will help countries accelerate progress, bring high-speed connectivity to all, and lay the foundations for a vibrant digital economy.

State of the Africa Region The Role of Regional Cooperation in Tackling Fragility

Fragility has become the new development frontier; by 2030, 620 million people or more than 80% of the world’s poorest could be living in fragile contexts, largely in Africa.

The State of the Africa Region seminar provided an opportunity for African leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators and development partners to dig deeper into how regional corporation can fuel the fight against fragility across the region, reflect on the region’s challenges, the main trends shaping the continent’s economic and the development landscape.

Meet the 2019 Blog4Dev Regional Winners

In 2018, the World Bank Africa Region launched its first regional Blog4Dev competition, inviting young people from all 48 Sub-Saharan African countries to write about what it would take to prepare the region’s young people for the future of work. The competition attracted more than a thousand entries and produced winning blogs from 32 countries. The winning bloggers were invited to spend a week in Washington, D.C. during Spring Meetings, where they had an opportunity to share their ideas with leaders from their countries and the World Bank.
