Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting on the Sahel with Dr. Issa Doubragne, President of the G5 Sahel Council of Ministers and Minister of Economy, Development Planning and International Cooperation of the Republic of Chad

WASHINGTON, November 23 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Dr. Issa Doubragne, President of the G5 Sahel Council of Ministers and Minister of Economy, Development Planning and International Cooperation of the Republic of Chad.

President Malpass thanked Minister Doubragne for his leadership as President of the G5 Sahel Council of Ministers and affirmed the World Bank Group’s commitment to supporting Sahel countries as they work to address critical development issues.

Noting the Sahel’s key importance to IDA, President Malpass and Minister Doubragne discussed the strong, continued support by IDA shareholders to G5 nations, and the need for a robust IDA20 replenishment for good development outcomes in the region.

President Malpass and Minister Doubragne discussed the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend – or SWEDD – project, and its critical support for girls and women.

President Malpass and Minister Doubragne also discussed the role of the Great Green Wall (GGW) Initiative in addressing climate change adaptation and biodiversity, the importance of expanded electricity access, and the urgency in boosting vaccine availability through the World Bank’s joint work with the African Union and AVAT.
