Inclusive Internship in World Bank in Uruguay

The World Bank’s Office in Uruguay is recruiting an intern for a six-month period, based in Montevideo, to support the Uruguay Country Team in developing and implementing the country program.

Regional Context

The World Bank Group serves 30 client countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean Region (LCR). Clients range from large rapidly growing sophisticated middle-income clients to IDA countries, to small Caribbean states, and to one fragile state. Despite immense resources, dynamic societies, and an average annual per capita income of about US$4,000, deep inequalities persist in most LAC countries, with nearly a quarter of the Region's people living in poverty. The World Bank Group’s support to the LAC Region is focused on investing in human capital, strengthening the economic recovery, improving infrastructure, and protecting the poor.

Country Unit and Position Context

The LC7 Country Management Unit (CMU) is responsible for Bank operations in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, and is composed of a decentralized office in Buenos Aires, where the Country Director (CD) and the Operations Manager (OM) are based, an Anchor Office at Headquarters; and Country Offices in Asunción and Montevideo, each led by a Resident Representative (RR). The Buenos Aires office covers all aspects of the operational business from the field. The CMU oversees a wide range of Bank activities, including a large number of operations and a diverse knowledge program. Given the setup of the CMU, extensive communication and coordination among virtual teams working in Buenos Aires, Asunción, Montevideo and Headquarters (HQ) is required.  The CMU is looking for an experienced, high-performing, energetic Intern to join the team in Montevideo, Uruguay, to support the CMU’s work in the coordination of the programming and implementation of the Bank portfolio in Uruguay. The selected Intern will be based in Montevideo, Uruguay and will report to the Resident Representative.

Role & Responsibilities:

The intern based in Montevideo will support the Uruguay Country Team in developing and implementing the country program. The Terms of Reference will be refined based on the specific qualifications and interests of the intern and will include research support for Advisory Services and Analytics in macroeconomics, poverty and competitiveness, as well as involvement with teams in project implementation and supervision in Agroecology and Education.

The Intern’s duties will include but are not limited to: 

  • Country Strategy: Support the Country Management Unit with the facilitation of the dialogue with the Government of Uruguay.
  • Technical Assistance: Provide analytical support to different Global Practices in their technical assistance programs for the Government of Uruguay, which could include jobs, gender, public sector efficiency, education, climate change, among others.
  • Operations: Become an operational liaison with the project beneficiaries; contribute to briefings and logistics aspects for important visits as well consultations with clients; review of documents for new operational packages; preparation of responses to ad hoc information requests from internal and external parties.
  • Cross-support: Communications, corporate initiatives lead, civil engagement as needed.

Selection Criteria

  • Minimum undergraduate studies in Economics, International Relations, Business, Social Sciences or Law; work experience on development related areas or organizations are desirable and will be a plus.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of various computer software applications (e.g., inter-related word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail, database and presentation applications). 
  • Proven ability to help organize data and information retrieval systems.
  • Strong English and Spanish languages skills, (verbal and written), including ability to draft routine correspondence and edit materials using proper grammar, punctuation and style.
  • Demonstrates orientation to detail and quality.
  • Effective time management and excellent organizational skills. 
  • Ability to quickly acquire a good knowledge of the Bank Group’s organization, procedures, policies and practices.
