Countries that ensure the quality of their infrastructure through both deliberate design, and appropriate use and maintenance consistently demonstrate greater resilience to the shocks and stresses that disaster and climate risk pose.
To enhance understanding of and investment toward Quality Infrastructure, the World Bank through the Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC) and the Government of Japan (Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Land Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) have jointly organized the “International Conference on Sustainable Development through Quality Infrastructure Investment” on January 20-21, 2016.
At the conference, the Disaster Risk Management Hub, Tokyo has convened a panel discussion on “Enhancing Resilience through Quality Infrastructure and Operations”, which brings together experts and practitioners from both government and development agencies, delivering these key aspects in projects in developing and developed countries.
Safety and resilience dimensions of Quality Infrastructure will be addressed with particular focus on enhanced resilience against natural disasters, improved operational safety, and durability:
- How governments can identify and prioritize resilience-enhancing opportunities in their current and future infrastructure needs;
- How governments and development partners can promote the value of quality infrastructure that is resilient to the hazards faced; and
- How governments can ensure that risk-informed infrastructure and risk-reducing infrastructure are operated and maintained to provide value and manage risks over time.
