Bank plans to further develop two-way partnership with Poland, an important and growing voice on the global scene.
Warsaw, April 12, 2012 – World Bank Managing Director Caroline Anstey, says the World Bank is committed to consolidating and further broadening its ties with Poland and keen to work with Polish authorities on global issues.
Her comments came at the end of a two day visit to the country, during which the Managing Director met key policymakers as well as representatives of civil society organizations. Anstey was also the keynote speaker at a seminar, jointly organized by the Bank and the National Bank of Poland, with her speech focused on “Democratizing Development in a Transforming World.:
“Countries like Poland have a special role to play in the global debates on economic development.” Anstey said. Poland’s experience shows how sound policies and strong political leadership can deliver success. This experience – the “Polish know how” – is an important ingredient for others to learn from and to be successful, and only Poland can provide it.”
Anstey said the World Bank was also looking forward to working closely with Poland on global issues on common interest.
“The World Bank also believes that it is the right time for Poland to step up its international role and increase its contribution to international development cooperation“ she said. The World Bank confirmed its high interest in working with Poland to strengthen the impact of its development programs and to facilitate the transfer of Poland’s knowledge and experience to other countries.
During her visit to Poland, Anstey met with Professor Marek Belka, Governor of the National Bank of Poland, Mr. Jacek Dominik, Undersecretary of State, Ministry of Finance, Ms. Beata Stelmach, Undersecretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with the representatives of the Civil Society Organizations. The discussions focused on Poland’s increasing role in the changing world and the directions of the future partnership between Poland and the World Bank.
“The World Bank is committed to further supporting Poland by continuing to provide financial and technical assistance.” said Anstey. “We are also engaged in a dialogue with the Government to share global experience and support policy reforms in areas as diverse as business environment, transport, health, and civil service modernization. We believe that this ought to be a two-way partnership; Poland has much to offer and contribute to other countries’ development – through financial support, by sharing its successful experience of transition, and by taking an active part in the global debates. We look forward to partnering with Poland in this context.”
