“A Better Workplace and Environment for Women: Achieving the SDGs, Law and Policy Commitments in Africa” organized by Equality Now and the WORLD Policy Analysis Center at UCLA in collaboration with Women, Business and the Law on May 28-30 convened about 40 participants from civil society organizations and local institutions working on women’s rights and empowerment across 12 African countries with the following objectives:
- To exchange knowledge and build capacity on issues of gender workplace discrimination including sexual harassment, focusing on countries across Africa represented at the convening (Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, Togo, and Tunisia)
- To identify advocacy efforts that already exist to address legislative gaps and/or to implement laws to end workplace discrimination
- To explore opportunities to develop new national advocacy campaigns, strategic litigation efforts, or build on or expand existing campaigns, in particular by using global data, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Maputo Protocol to hold governments accountable to end workplace discrimination.
Sessions focused on how global data can support local campaigns and reform efforts, the legal framework protecting women from workplace discrimination and sexual harassment, as well as gaps in national laws, and highlighted data from Women, Business and the Law’s accessing institutions, getting a job, going to court and protecting women from violence indicators. Discussions further addressed the challenges women encounter in the workplace, as well as strategic litigation and advocacy campaigns. Each of the sessions included presentations by Women, Business and the Law and representatives from Equality Now and world.
