Africa is home to some of the world's most vibrant transboundary water resources – the Nile River, Lake Chad and many more. Across the continent, 63 river basins are a shared resource among two or more countries; they provide 90 percent of the continent’s surface waters and support the livelihoods of some 500 million people. With so much water dependence among countries, managing Africa's shared water resources is critical to drive economic growth and build resilience to a changing climate.
On the sidelines of Africa Water Week, join a panel of experts on transboundary waters in West Africa and the Sahel as they showcase the dynamics of the Volta, Niger, and Lake Chad Rivers Basins and how countries can work together to better manage these shared waters for the benefit of millions of people. The event will feature a keynote address by OMVS (Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Sénégal or Senegal River Basin Development Authority) on the benefit sharing principles and institutional and financial arrangements governing OMVS’s success. The event will also call on several other basin commissions across Africa to share lessons learned on how cooperation can promote sustainable development.
