LIMA, Oct. 29, 2012. - At the 2012 Sanitation Hackathon, civic technologists will develop solutions so more people have access to better sanitation facilities, through the use of Information and Communication Technologies.
Supported by the World Bank, this event convenes software developers to find innovative solutions to technology-related problems affecting sanitation.
What are the problems that teams may solve?
This year we have identified six challenges:
- Collecting sanitation data in areas without connectivity
- Promoting hygiene to decrease children mortality,
- Providing bathrooms at lower prices,
- What are the areas in Latin American that urgently need investment in sanitation?
- What can companies do to provide better sanitation services to users?
- How to solve other problems of sanitation (open category)
The World Bank sponsored in 2011 the Water Hackathon, where techies developed solutions using crowdsourcing, mapping, mobile games and other applications.
Hackathons are increasingly used to pair young technologists with development challenges. In order to bring about new technological innovations in the water and sanitation sector, the World Bank along with its many partners and stakeholders initiated a process that culminated in the first-ever Water Hackathon in October 2011. The event featured nearly 1000 registered hackers at ten locations worldwide who developed some 62 new prototypes. The Sanitation Hackathon builds off of the Water Hackathon’s successful experience of building communities of civic technologists dedicated to innovation in public service delivery.
COMPETITION DATES:
- Deadline for team registration: November 28, 2012
- Sending proposal: until December 2, 2012 (10 am-5GMT)
- Virtual Interviews with the semifinalists: December 2, 2012
- Announcement of finalists: December 2, 2012
- Regional Winner Announcement: May 2013
AWARDS
For the three finalists (December 2012):
- 1,000 US$ to refine the project.
- travel and accommodation to attend the Regional Conference on Sanitation LATINOSAN (Panama, May 2013).
For the winner (May 2013):
- 3,000 US$ as seed funding.
