World Bank Country Director Consults on New Strategy for Nepal

KATHMANDU, September 7, 2011 – Ellen Goldstein, the World Bank Country Director for Nepal and Bangladesh, visited Kathmandu to consult with the new Government, political party leaders, and senior Government officials on the World Bank’s country strategy for Nepal for the period FY12-FY13. The Bank’s Board of Executive Directors is scheduled to discuss the new strategy on September 15, 2011.

During her visit, Goldstein met with Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun and discussed the economic and development priorities of the new Government. She also met with President of the Nepali Congress Mr. Sushil Koirala, Chairman of the CPN-UML and former Prime Minister Mr. Jhala Nath Khanal, as well as Constituent Assembly members and the economic advisors to the main political parties.

During these discussions Goldstein noted that the World Bank will remain a firm partner to Nepal in the transition to peace and stability. She said the present situation is an unparalleled opportunity for Nepalis across the political spectrum to cement the peace in a spirit of compromise and to put their country on a path of high economic growth and development.
