World Bank Management Appoints the New Country Director for Turkey

Ankara, November 29, 2006—The World Bank announced today the appointment of Ulrich Zachau as the Country Director for Turkey in the Europe and Central Asia Vice-Presidency (ECA).

Mr. Zachau, a German national, joined the Bank in 1988.  He has since held various staff and management positions at the World Bank, including in Operations in Asia, Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean as well as in Finance, Policy, and Research.  In his most recent assignment, he has served as Director of Strategy and Operations for the Latin America and Caribbean Vice-Presidency.  He will transfer to the Europe and Central Asia Vice Presidency on January 15, 2007.

Mr. Zachau holds degrees in mathematics and economics from the University of Munich and a Ph. D. degree in economics from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.  Before joining the World Bank, he worked for McKinsey&Co and taught economics at the University of Bonn.  He is married to Nancy J. Walker, has two children, and speaks German, English, and Spanish.
