Call for Entries: The Art of Innovation – Visual Arts Exhibition Celebrating Mongolia

The representatives for Mongolia of the World Bank Group, in partnership with the World Bank Group Art Program, and on the occasion of the Export Development Project for improving competitiveness of Mongolian enterprises, is launching a call for submissions for an upcoming exhibition featuring works of art that highlight the importance of innovation and Mongolia’s economic competitiveness, as well as showcase what it means to be Mongolian in the 21st century.

The Mongolian economy has experienced rapid growth over the last 15 years led by the mining sector and private sector development. However, over-dependence on mineral wealth has made the economy susceptible to external shocks and contributed to boom-and-bust cycles. The WBG studies have identified that also tourism; meat and milk; transport services; wool, cashmere and leather products; as well as potentially ICT, are the economic sectors where Mongolia may have a comparative advantage, but important logistic, financial and organizational challenges remain. The Export Development Project helps the enterprises in the non-mining sector to improve the competitiveness of their products and supports the development of export credit insurance in Mongolia.

Art has the ability to generate innovative ideas, inspire action, and connect communities to new ways of doing things. This exhibition will celebrate Mongolian art and culture and showcase the power of innovation, shedding light on the importance of export diversification, and support for enterprises looking to grow and develop new products. Furthermore, the exhibition will confront the question: What defines the identity of Mongolia as it grows and advances in the 21st century?

  • This exhibition will showcase works of visual art that discuss the importance and impact of both individual and societal innovation.  Innovation is that which creates a new product, or approach to solving problems or achieving milestones. The World Bank Group is seeking artworks that engage with all definitions of innovation, and the cultural ripple effect it creates (socially, politically, or economically, for example). How will innovation define the 21st century identity of Mongolia? We invite artworks of any medium.

    Submissions will be judged on: relevance to the theme, power of the message, originality in treating the theme, creativity, technical quality, and suitability for presentation in a workplace of an international organization.

    The World Bank is an international organization that works in a multicultural environment where the works of art it displays reflect the different countries and their cultures. The philosophy of the organization respects the diversity of belief and sensibilities of different cultures. For that reason, the World Bank Art Program limits the depiction of religious images, sexual subjects, nudes, and/or works with a marked political content that might be deemed offensive or inappropriate. Pieces cannot be made of dangerous materials, or weapons.

    The artworks must not contain hazardous substances or materials deemed to be inflammable, radioactive, perishable, or gasses. Nor will works be admitted that are made of feathers, coral, or animal hides.

  • The call for submissions is open to emerging artists, and established professional artists. Although the selection process will favor emerging artists with less well-established credentials, better-known artists will be included provided that they have had an impact on younger generations of artists. There is no age limit to those who can apply.

    Project staff contracted through World Bank supported projects are eligible to participate.

    World Bank Group staff, including Consultants, Interns, Contractors and their immediate family members, are not eligible to participate. Non-immediate/distant relatives of the panel members are also ineligible.

  • Participation Guidelines for Artists
    To be considered for this exhibition, each artist needs to submit:

    • Images of the artworks being submitted (no more than 10 artworks can be submitted and 2-D works cannot be larger than 190cm across, and 228cm high)
      Each image must be accompanied by the following data:
      • Name of the artist/author
      • Title of the work
      • Year of creation
      • Technique
      • Dimensions (in centimeters and kilograms).
    • Maximum 300-word artistic statement about the artworks being submitted, and how they relate to the theme
    • 1 page artist CV

    *Photographs and other digital representations of artworks can be sent as low-resolution image files (jpeg format). The required maximum horizontal dimension is 1920 pixels and the maximum vertical dimension is 1080 pixels with a resolution of 300 dpi. and maximum image file size of 2 MB.

    Deadline
    Complete applications should be submitted by 23:59 your local time on February 28, 2019. For email’s this means they should be in the inbox of artprogram@worldbank.org by this time, for post mail it means that the entries should be postmarked by this time.

    Communication
    All artists will receive an email confirmation for the receipt of their materials. Beyond this, only those artists selected to exhibit in the final show will be notified.

    Copyrights
    The artwork remain the property of the participating artists. If the World Bank or any partner organization would like to use images of the works beyond the scope of this exhibition, it will be with prior approval of the artist and with due credit.

    The images of the works selected for the exhibitions may be reproduced in the exhibition catalogue, promotional material (posters, invitations), as well as any other materials deemed educational. For non-commercial and educational materials, the World Bank Art Program and its partners cannot be asked by the artist or his/her representative to pay for any reproduction fee or royalties.

    Selection Committee
    After receiving all entries, an international panel of judges, representing leaders from the contemporary art, and SME and innovation sectors, as well as representatives from Mongolia, will review them in late February to select the final artists and artworks to be a part of the final exhibition. Those artists selected will be notified in early March if their pieces have been selected.

    No fixed number of works is established for the final exhibition. The decision is based on the quality of submissions and curatorial selection.

    Exhibition Structure
    The selected artists and their works will be featured in a monographic exhibition, curated by the World Bank Art Program opening at the Main Complex of the World Bank Group in Washington DC in April 2019. The exhibition will be on view for approximately two months. The exhibition will be accompanied by an exhibition brochure published by the World Bank Group, showcasing the works, the artists, and relevance of the exhibition theme to international development.


    If selected, the main responsibility of the artists will be to be a responsive partner with the World Bank Group during the organization of the exhibition, and to assure timely response to the Bank’s requests.

    THE WORLD BANK RESPONSIBILITIES

    Loan agreement

    The works selected for the exhibitions will be sent to the World Bank on a temporary

    loan basis, said loan to be guaranteed by signature of a "loan agreement" form. The Borrowers (World Bank Art Program) will not pay any rental fee for the loan of the artwork to be displayed at the exhibition.

    Acquisitions

    Private buyers (galleries, individuals, associations) may desire to acquire artworks from the exhibition. The World Bank Art Program will provide the potential buyer with the contact information of the artist and the transaction will take place outside the World Bank. The World Bank Art Program will not charge any commission.

    Insurance and unforeseen circumstances

    Works selected for exhibition will be insured by the World Bank Group when the artworks arrive to the Main Complex World Bank Group building in Washington DC, and for the duration of the exhibition. The artist is responsible for insuring the artworks for the transportation of the artworks to and from Washington, DC.

    Payments

    The World Bank will pay for the installation of the exhibition. The World Bank will not be able to pay the artists any fees.

    For photographic works, the World Bank will pay for the printing and framing of the art for the exhibition using its own equipment and resources.

    The artists are responsible for the shipment of their artworks to and from Washington, DC.

    Promotion

    The World Bank will promote the exhibition in the usual ways allowed for the World Bank Group’s programs and in close coordination with partner organizations.

    Printed Materials

    The World Bank will design, print, and disseminate a brochure of the exhibition.  Each artist will receive 10 complimentary copies of the brochure.
