Sandeep Mahajan is the Regional Practice Director for Prosperity in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan & Pakistan region at the World Bank Group, based in Washington, DC. He joined the Bank in 1999 as an Economist in the Economic Policy Sector and has since held various positions, including Lead Economist in Africa and East Asia, adviser to the World Bank’s MD and Senior VP for Operations and Practice Manager in the Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment Global Practice in the ECA region. His most recent assignment was as Practice Manager for Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment in Western and Central Africa (AFW). Sandeep holds a Ph.D. from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) from the University of Delhi. He was the lead author of the Future Drivers of Growth in Rwanda study (prepared jointly with the Government of Rwanda), the Vietnam 2035 report (prepared jointly with the Government of Vietnam), and the Economics of South African Townships report (prepared in close collaboration with the South African National treasury). His areas of expertise include Economic Growth Diagnostics, Fiscal Policy, Inclusive Growth, and Trade Competitiveness.
