Over the last year or so the Bank has adopted a number of major new initiatives to secure progress on the Bank's core mission of poverty reduction. These include the introduction of the CDF, the outcome-based approach to the CAS, the formulation of joint Bank - IMF Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers, and the WDR 2000/1, centered on the theme of "Attacking Poverty". These initiatives stress the need for the Bank to establish balance between macroeconomic and human development objectives, integration across sectors, and partnerships that are based in government ownership and broad consultation. Within the central role of country programs, this calls for new strategic thinking on sectoral interventions. Accordingly, the Transport Sector Board has taken the decision that the role of transport in poverty reduction should be established from this broader perspective. More recently, the PSI Council has taken a similar decision with regard to infrastructure and PSD; the transport work will also feed into this wider effort by PSI.
