Afghan Villagers Start Small Businesses and Become Self-Sufficient

Like 21,000 other Afghan villagers in the eastern Nangarhar Province, Nazeema received a loan to start her small business. She used hers to buy a sewing machine and a cow. The mother of six, with an ill husband, she produces 150 dresses every two weeks and supplies them to the local market. The support she received is channeled through the Afghanistan Rural Enterprise Development Program, which aims to increase employment and income of rural communities in five of the 34 provinces in Afghanistan.
