Getting Sri Lanka’s Women to Work

Over the past few decades, Sri Lanka has attained remarkable progress in health and education outcomes for women. Gender parity in primary and secondary education was achieved well before other countries in the South Asia region. Also, women are having fewer children and waiting till later to have them. Yet, women’s labor force participation has remained persistently low and even declined in recent years. This is a missed opportunity with serious consequences for Sri Lanka’s continued prosperity and its future development trajectory.
