Environmental and Social Framework Video

In August 2016, the World Bank adopted a new Environmental and Social Framework (ESF). TheESF protects people and the environment from potential adverse impacts that could arise fromBank-financed projects, and promotes sustainable development. This new framework providesbroad coverage, including important advances on transparency, non-discrimination, social inclusion, public participation and accountability. The ESF also places more emphasis on building Borrower governments’ own capacity to deal with environmental and social issues.Preparations to implement the ESF are underway, with plans to be up and running during 2018. The ESF will incrementally replace the Safeguard Policies; the two will operate in parallel for about seven years to govern projects approved before and after the date the ESF starts to be applied.
