The Transformative Power of Educating an Adolescent Girl

Keeping girls in school is associated with later marriage, later childbearing, lower maternal and infant mortality rates, lower birth rates, and lower rates of HIV/AIDS. An increase of just 1% percent in the share of women who have completed secondary school can increase per capita income growth by 0.3%.President Jim Kim announced that the World Bank Group (WBG) would invest $2.5 billion over five years in education projects directly benefiting adolescent girls (aged 12-17) in April 2016. $530 million has been committed since in three high-need countries: Lebanon, Pakistan, and Nigeria.
